How many guests should you invite to a wake?

Guidance on estimating numbers, managing RSVPs sensitively, and choosing a venue with the right capacity.

One of the first practical questions when planning a wake is how many people to expect. Getting this wrong in either direction — too few seats or too large a venue — can add unnecessary stress at an already difficult time.

Start with the funeral attendance

The wake will typically be attended by most of the people who came to the funeral service. A useful rule of thumb is to plan for 70–80% of funeral attendees to come to the reception. If you expect 80 people at the service, plan for 55–65 at the wake.

Do you need to formally invite people?

This is a matter of personal preference. Some families invite everyone at the funeral via an announcement at the service. Others prefer a more private gathering with closer family and friends. There is no obligation to invite everyone, and it is perfectly acceptable to have a smaller, more intimate reception.

Managing RSVPs sensitively

Asking people to RSVP for a wake can feel awkward, but it is entirely practical and most people understand. A simple note with the funeral order of service, or a message through the funeral director, is the usual approach. Do not feel obliged to chase responses — many people will simply turn up or not, and venues are generally flexible on final numbers up to a day or two before.

Choosing a venue with the right capacity

Look for a venue that can comfortably hold your expected number with room to move around. For a standing buffet reception, allow around 1 square metre per person. For a more relaxed seated gathering, allow more. Most venues will advise on their capacity for different layouts — always ask whether they have hosted wakes before, as experienced venues will guide you well.
